Dental Bonding: Quick Aesthetic Fixes at EGil Dental

Are you unhappy about the way your teeth look? Do you avoid smiling in photos or when talking to people because of unwanted dental issues? Dental bonding is the perfect solution to make smiles look their best.

Dental bonding is a dental cosmetic procedure developed to address each tooth’s aesthetical problems, such as a misaligned tooth, a damaged tooth, a chipped tooth, or a tooth with gaps. The bond is made from a composite resin, and, thanks to its uniquely versatile properties and applications – also perfectly resistant to discoloration and cracking – bonding can fix a plethora of dental imperfections.

If the above mentioned dental problems your teeth, you are likely a great candidate for dental bonding. To learn more, we asked one of the best cosmetic dental practitioners, Dr Gil at EGil Dental, about what dental bonding can do.

Dental Bonding Versus Other Solutions

Dental bonding is not the only dental cosmetic solution available. Other options would include veneers and lumineers.

Veneers are membranes which cover the front and sometimes sides of teeth – typically porcelain is the material of choice. A lamplight is used to harden the veneer onto the tooth.

Lumineers are similar to veneers, but even thinner, typically measuring only about 0.2 millimeters. They are more gentle with the tooth than traditional veneers, and, also, reversible without affecting the actual tooth underneath.

So, why would you choose bonding over the other options? One reason would be that both veneers and lumineers are significantly more expensive than bonding, so it is a more budget-friendly solution.

What are the Procedures involved?

The dental bonding procedure typically goes quickly, with each tooth taking perhaps an hour to be treated.

It starts with the application of a liquid etch to the tooth, which prepares it to accept the bonding material. The material is then injected and applied in a thin layer, with a special light shone onto it to speed up the hardening process. When the layer is in place, more composite resin is applied and hardened in the same manner, until the desired shape and hardness of the bonding material is achieved.

Pros and Cons

Bonding has several benefits, primarily speed and cost effectiveness. Easy application without the need of lab work involved in the procedures necessary for veneers and lumineers, and a considerably faster treatment time, are extra advantages. Besides that, no anesthesia is required as the procedure is non-invasive.

As for potential drawbacks, composite resin can discolour somewhat over time, and may not always match the surrounding teeth well. Patients should also limit foods and drinks which may stain the bonding material. Resin bonding also will not last the 20 years on average that veneers and lumineers do; it needs to be replaced every 5 to 10 years.
